Merdeka MRT Station is named after the historical Independence Stadium (Malay: Stadium Merdeka), where Malaysia was declared independent from the British Empire on 31st August 1957. Due to its historical significance, the underground station features lots of cultural decorations, including the text of the Malaysian national pledge on the wall of the station’s concourse, flags and emblems of each state of Malaysia on every pillar, as well as a 14-pointed star motif on the ceiling above the escalator.

Travellers who disembark at this station are within a 10-minute walk from landmarks such as Merdeka Stadium, Masjid Al-Bukhary, Malaysia Basketball Association (MABA) indoor basketball stadium and the under construction Merdeka 118 (formerly known as KL118 or Warisan Merdeka), tallest building in the town.

Merdeka MRT Station is also connected with the Plaza Rakyat LRT Station via a 150 metre-long pedestrian walkway, allowing commuters to interchange with the LRT Ampang Line and the LRT Sri Petaling Line.

The distance between Plaza Rakyat LRT Station and Petaling Street (Chinatown) is approximately 500 meters, which takes around 5-7 minutes of walking time. Once you exit the LRT Station, you can walk southward along Jalan Raja Laut, and then turn right onto Jalan Tun Tan Cheng Lock, which leads you straight to Petaling Street.

Alternatively, you can alight at the Pasar Seni MRT Station. Entrance A provides access to Petaling Street, which is located approximately 200 meters away.
